Do I Need To Take Protein On Off Days?

Hey all,

A lot of people tend to ask this question.  In order to answer it we have to ask ourselves “What is protein for?”  It is general knowledge that protein helps rebuild the tears in your muscles from intense exercise, so  do you need to take protein supplements on non-lifting days?

You should be taking your protein consistently even on your off days.

Your muscles don’t fully recover after one day.  Studies have shown that it takes days and sometimes a full week depending on the intensity of the workout.  The entire recovery process requires a steady intake of protein.  This will ensure maximum muscle growth and allow your body to make a complete recovery.

You should be taking some protein on your lifting days, cardio days, and even no activity days.  This is assuming that you are also consistently working out so that your body needs to recovery quickly.

Most resources suggest a protein intake of one gram per pound of body weight.

Don’t get into the mind set that your protein intake is just for a post-workout meal.  Your body absorbs nutrients quicker within an hour of working out, so that post-workout meal is still important; however, the more intense the exercise the more protein you will need to recover and maintain your muscle development throughout the day.

Hope this helped answer peoples’ questions.
